Literally translating from Arabic, “Iman e Mujmal” means “Concise Faith”. It is a brief, all-encompassing statement that encapsulates the absolute minimum core beliefs required to enter the fold of Islam.
Iman e Mujmal: Concise and general affirmation of faith.
Iman e Mufassal: Detailed belief in specific articles of faith (Allah, Angels, Books, Prophets, Qiyamah, Qadr).
While not a specific ritual like Salah, believing in its content is absolutely fundamental and compulsory for being a Muslim. Reciting it verbally is highly recommended, especially for renewal of faith and as part of daily remembrance, but the core is the belief in the heart.
Belief in Iman e Mujmal implies acceptance of the details in Iman e Mufassal. However, Islam encourages seeking knowledge. A Muslim must believe in the six articles of faith detailed in Iman e Mufassal. Knowing Iman e Mufassal is essential for a complete understanding of Islamic creed. Mujmal is the foundation; Mufassal is the necessary elaboration.
As early as possible! Once children start talking clearly, begin teaching them the simple translation and the Arabic words in a fun, engaging way. It’s often one of the very first Islamic concepts taught alongside the Shahadah and basic manners.
The key is to believe that Allah possesses these Names and Attributes as He has described them, without distortion or comparison. If you don’t fully grasp the depth (e.g., Al-Quddus – The Most Holy), believe in it generally as a perfection unique to Allah and avoid trying to imagine “how”. Seek authentic explanations from scholars. Your belief is still valid as long as you accept it as truth from Allah.
